09 Apr NO-FEAR WEBINAR: “COVID-19: ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS AND PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT IN HOSPITAL CARE” 25TH MARCH
On Wednesday 25th March 2020, NO-FEAR held its third webinar discussing the COVID-19 outbreak, this time focusing on ethical implications and psychosocial support in hospital care. The webinar, hosted by NO-FEAR partner Centre for Security and Society, University of Freiburg, saw NO-FEAR partners discuss some of the related ethical and psychosocial issues, present first-hand experiences and share initial solution concepts.
The webinar featured sessions led by our partners, including:
- Dr Sabina Magalini from Università Cattolica Del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) who conducted an interview with bioethics expert Prof Laura Palazzani from Lumsa University. The interview provided insights to some important questions from an ethical perspective, such as if staff should work without PPE, how to classify patients and if surveillance processes can be used to help contain the virus.
- Psychologist Babara Juen and Health Visitor Rachele Brancaleoni from UCSC explored psychosocial challenges during the crisis and potential solutions, according to the experiences occurring at their hospitals. They also highlighted the potential challenges to be faced by hospital staff in the future, such as stigmatisation of practitioners, accommodating patients’ religious beliefs and managing palliative care in isolation.
The webinar ended with a question-and-answer session, where participants were able to share their ethics concerns and ask questions to the NO-FEAR partners. Themes included ethical data sharing and deployment of newly qualified staff into COVID-19 wards.
